Urethra infection (Urethritis):
requent in classic sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhoea. Can be caused atypically by chlamydias, ureaplasms, mycoplasms and trichomonads. Further causes as in bacterial inflammation of Bladder and prostate gland.

Diagnosis confirmed by urethra smear tests. Therapy with antibiotics. Partner therapy also necessary in order to prevent so-called “ping-pong infections.”

Urethritis can lead to narrowing of the urethra, or urethral stricture.

Urethral stricture
Can be caused by infections and sexually transmitted diseases, and also by injury (e.g. tearing of the urethra in accidents), catheterisation of the urethra, surgery or congenital malformation.

Therapy by surgery, ranging from a simple incision ( Urethrotomy) to open reconstructive surgery, which may require one operation or more (e.g. plastic surgery using oral mucous membrane, reconstructive skin transplant).

Urethra tumours:

Overall such tumours are very rare. Depending on the urothelial or squamous epithelial origin
  •  90% from the lowest part of the bladder (cervix vesicae)
  • tumours occasioned by infections, such as condylomata accuminata (genital warts)
